Banana coffee breakfast smoothie

Unfortunately, skipping an early meal leads to a drop in blood sugar and energy levels, and by mid morning you’ll either be snoozing on the desk or making a beeline to the nearest vending machine for some sugary snacks. Instead, try topping up nutrient levels with this super-healthy smoothie. It’s low in fat, easy to drink and digest, packed with fibre and vitamins and will help your day get off to a flying start. It keeps flagging energy levels up, and helps you to stay away from snacking. It even counts towards your five a day, and most importantly of all, it still gives you that vital first-thing-in-the-morning caffeine buzz to get you going!

To serve one, you’ll need:

  • 1/2 a banana – ripe works best. This is a great way of using up slightly over-ripe bananas.
  • 150ml fat-free plain yoghurt
  • 150ml skimmed mik
  • 1 good tablespoon honey
  • 100ml cold, strong, black espresso coffee
  • ice cubes

What to do:

Put everything except the ice in the blender and pulse until smooth. Add the ice cubes one at a time, and pulse until roughly crushed. Pour everything into an insulated cup, add a straw and either drink immediately or take it to work. If you like, you can also add a dusting of cocoa powder or cinnamon to the top before drinking. The smoothie is best drunk immediately, but to save time in the morning make the coffee the night before and put it in the fridge.
