We all know how coffee can deliver that much-needed boost in the morning – but did you know it can do the same for your skin and hair? At this time of year, with temperatures plummeting outside and the indoors centrally heated, our skin often can’t cope very well with the extremes. Moving from one environment to the other can lead to dry, flaky skin and dull-looking hair. These homemade coffee beauty fixes will help to brighten skin and hair, and best of all they contain used coffee grounds which would otherwise be thrown away, so they’re a great environmental choice.
You can make a very effective scrub with just two ingredients. All you need is around six tablespoonfuls of used espresso coffee grounds (it really needs to be espresso, as the grounds are very fine and won’t damage delicate skin), and four tablespoons of olive or coconut oil. If you like, you can also add a couple of drops of lavender essential oil. Just mix everything together and put it in a sealed box in the fridge. When you want to use it, take out a portion and rub it into your skin in gentle circular movements, before rinsing off with plenty of warm water. You can also use this scrub to remove garlic and onion odours from your hands if you’ve been cooking.
If you have dark hair, you can make a coffee wash that will give it a glossy shine. Steep six tablespoons of used coffee grounds in warm water for half an hour, then filter out the grounds and discard them. Let the mixture cool down, and put it in the fridge to chill (applying it cold helps seal the hair follicles). Wash your hair as normal, then rinse it with the coffee mixture then with plain water before drying as normal.
