Does coffee improve your work performance?

Study finds that coffee helps promote a team working environment. If you’ve got a dull work meeting ahead that you’re dreading, you might well feel the need to make sure you’re stocked up with an extra large cup of coffee before you go in. A new study, though, shows that caffeine could be helping you though that meeting in more ways than one.

The study, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, has discovered that drinking coffee can help improve your work performance. Researchers at Ohio State University discovered that workers had increased alertness and improved focus, which in turn resulted in better teamwork.

The study involved monitoring two groups of students. The first group were asked not to have any coffee before taking part in the study. On arrival, the group was told they’d be taking part in a taste test. Have the participants were given a cup of regular coffee at the beginning of the study, and asked to rate its flavour, while the remaining half weren’t given coffee until the end of the session.

During the study, the participants were split into small group and asked to talk about lively topics such as inequality for a quarter of an hour. They were then asked to note how they thought they’d performed during the conversation, and also the performance of the other participants.

The results showed that those who drank coffee at the beginning of the study were more likely to rate both themselves and their fellow group members more highly than those who hadn’t yet had a caffeine fix.

The second study was run on similar lines, but this time all students were given coffee at the beginning. The only catch was that half of them were given decaff, with the other half having regular coffee. Once again, those who drank the regular coffee rated themselves and their teammates more highly. The authors of the study believe that the results are due to the caffeine boosting alertness and promoting an atmosphere of engagement. Researchers also concluded that those who drank caffeinated coffee tended to stay more focussed on the topic under discussion.
