What is the difference between Arabica and Robusta Coffees?
The Coffea Arabica plant is a direct descendent of the Coffea originally indigenous in Ethiopia and is deemed the first species of coffee to ever be cultivated. The Coffea Arabica plant has been grown in Arabia for in excess of ten centuries. In addition to its more common name “Arabica Coffee’”, it is also referred to as “Coffee Shrub of Arabia” or “Mountain Coffee”. Coffea Arabica plants thrive at high altitudes, anywhere from 610 and 1830 metres above sea level, hence the name “Mountain Coffee”. Mild temperatures and rainfall of around 152cm annually are optimal conditions for Arabica to flourish. Coffea Arabica plants can take up to seven years to fully mature and only grow to around 5 metres in height.
Arabica Coffee makes up around 70 per cent of worldwide coffee production and is considered to be far superior to other coffee species. Roasted Arabica coffee is mild and aromatic and is naturally lower in caffeine than other coffees with around 40-50% less caffeine content.

The Coffea Canephora (Robusta) plant originates from Africa. The Robusta coffee bean is smaller and rounder in appearance than the Arabica coffee bean. Robusta plants have shallow root systems; they grow as robust trees that can reach 10 metres in height. Robusta coffee trees are able to grow in higher temperatures of up to 29°C and can be found in Brazil and Southeast Asia. Coffea Canephora plants can withstand harsher growing conditions and produce a higher crop yield meaning production costs are reduced. Robusta trees do not require the tender loving care that Arabica crops demand therefore making it the less expensive of the two species.
Robusta Coffee makes up around 30% of global coffee production. Coffea Canephora plants produce a bitter tasting coffee with less flavour that has double the caffeine content than that of Arabica. Robusta naturally has a more intense taste, yet this powerful flavour can be desirable in a blend to give it perceived “strength” and “finish”, with excellent crema.
