Every year, we’re treated to some wild and wacky ideas for adding ingredients to coffee or serving it in weird and wonderful ways. Here’s a round up of what caught our eye in 2018.
Coffee in a cone: Yep, that’s right, hot coffee served in what’s pretty much an ice cream cone. Messy? Almost certainly. Chocolatey and delicious? Possibly, but only if you drink it quickly. A trend that started in South Africa, it fortunately doesn’t seem to have caught on much in the UK.
Cold brew coffee: This is coffee made without hot water. It’s basically coffee steeped in cold water for a long time, and fans say that helps the flavours stay fresher. On the downside, it takes a long time to make and you’re missing out on all those delicious coffee-brew aromas.
Coffee cocktails: These are still huge, and getting weirder and more wonderful. Coffee martinis are mainstream now – how about coffee mixed with everything from tequila to fresh lime juice and cinnamon?
Bizarre brewing methods: As coffee aficionados go further and further in their quest for the perfect brew, we’ve seen a resurgence in traditional brewing methods such as Turkish coffee pots, along with the best of modern technology with machines that look they belong on the space station.
Nitro coffee: Very specialist, this one, although it has been spotted for sale in trendy coffee bars. Basically, it involves running nitrogen through cold-brew coffee through a pressurised value. That give the coffee a creamy ‘head’, making it look a bit like a miniature pint of Guinness, and apparently results in a smooth, silky texture. Great as a summer drink, but probably a bit too much of a faff for most of us to take seriously!
